Ideas for Sabbath AfternoonParks
- Alumni Park: At the four-way stop in Angwin,
across from gas station.
- Bothe-Napa Valley State Park: Halfway between
St. Helena and Calistoga on Hwy. 29. Great hiking trails, native plant
garden, visitor's center, horseback riding.
- Crane Park: Take Hwy. 29 through St. Helena
towards Napa. Turn right by the A&W onto Grayson Street. Turn left
at the end of the road. The park will be on your left.
- Elmshaven:
Ellen White's last home. Go down Deer Park Rd. and turn right on
Sanitarium Rd. At the bottom of the hill below St. Helena Hospital,
turn right on Glass Mountain Rd. Follow the signs to Elmshaven on the
right.
Hikes
- Buzzard's Roost: Off Ink Grade Rd. This is
a nice easy hike with a nice vista.
- Mt. St. Helena and Table Rock: From
Calistoga, drive north on Hwy. 29 almost 8 miles until signs show you've
entered Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. There are parking lots on
both sides of the road. The trail is on the left. The trail on the right
goes to Table Rock, a two or three mile hike to a great overlook.
- Linda Falls: Paved trail starts immediately
before Caioca Pass. Dirt trail takes off to left after 1/4 mile. After
another 1/4 mile, the trail splits--take the trail on the right to the
falls. (Caution: This area is now private property that is marked with
"No Trespassing" signs. Proceed with care and ask for owner's
permission to pass.)
- Devil's Punchbowl: At the end of Liparita Avenue
off White Cottage. Trail on the left leads about one mile downhill to
large punchbowl and waterfall.
- Window Tree and Las Posadas Forest:
Great hikes close to the College. Easiest access is from the College
Airport or from the 90 degree turn on Las Posadas Road.
- Skyline Park: Off Imola
in Napa. Great trails. It's part of the trail that eventually is suppose
to go all the way around the bay.
Drives NB: Please take a map with you!
- Pope Valley: Take North Howell Mountain Road
down to Pope Valley for a winding, beautiful drive. Also nice along
Snell Valley Road. Gorgeous in the spring.
- Fort Ross: Just north from Jenner on Highway
1. Take Hwy. 29 into Calistoga. (Hwy. 29 becomes Hwy. 128.) Turn left
at the gas station onto Petrified Forest Road, then right on Mark West
Springs Road. Take this road across Hwy. 101, then head west on Hwy.
116, turn north on Hwy. 1. There is a great little winding road winding
through the hills to Cazadero and eventually by Duncans Mills at Highway
116.
- Knight's Valley: Take Highway 128 through
Calistoga into Knight's Valley and take the Ida Clayton Rd. across the
north side of Mt. St. Helena; comes out just this side of Middletown.
Could come back by way of Butts Canyon Rd. / Pope Valley.
- Mt. Veeder Road: Between Napa and Oakville
Grade (a great drive all by itself ). Go left from there across the
county line over to Highway 12 and follow your nose.
- Old Howell Mountain Road: Very windy drive
down to St. Helena. Provides some great views of the Napa Valley. Conn
Valley Road on the left will take you to Lake Hennessey.
- Goat Rock: Take Hwy. 29 into Calistoga. (Hwy.
29 becomes Hwy. 128.) Turn left at the gas station onto Petrified Forest
Road, then right on Mark West Springs Road. Take this road across Hwy.
101, then head west on Hwy. 116, turn south on Hwy. 1. Goat Rock Beach
will be on the right in a couple miles. There are also numerous other
beautiful beaches along Hwy. 1. (See below.)
- Salmon Creek: just north of Bodega Bay. This
beach has great dunes, plus there's a road right there that goes inland
leading to Occidental, from which you could take back roads back to
Angwin.
