I see it every time I watch the news channels. The scrolling news flashes
that populate the bottom of the screens ever since 9/11 give updates and
headlines about important news stories. Every few minutes one of the messages
that rolls by reminds us that we are at "terror alert 3" or
"moderate alert status" or words to that effect. Our country has been on a heightened state of alert for months now, though
much of the world which has regularly faced terror and attack have had
to live for some time with the anxiousness and uncertainty that we are
only now reluctantly having to integrate into our everyday lives. Since His time here on earth, Jesus has asked His children to be alert,
to be watchful, and to notice the events around us. He was quite specific
about it. He didn't say to worry about what we see take place, but rather
just to notice it - to see these grave events as a sure sign that His
appearance is near. To those outside the Christian family, it will undoubtedly seem strange
that we don't live in fear of the events we see. For us they are signposts,
way marks, assurances that Jesus really knew the future and is indeed
working actively in it even before it becomes reality for us. Perhaps the promise for our time is one God spoke to His people long
ago through His prophet: "All who rage against you will surely be
ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish.
Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who
wage war against you will be as nothing at all. For I am the Lord, you
God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, "Do not fear;
I will help you." Isaiah 41.11-13 NIV.
