It was Sabbath morning and I was serving at a Prayer Station Table at
the Powel Street trolly turn-around. There were three of us offering prayer
to passersby. A panhandler came up to us and requested prayer. He wanted
us to pray that he would make enough money during his panhandling that
day. We assured him that God cares what happens to us and that God provides
for all our needs. We lifted him up to God and shared his request in prayer.
He went on his way and we turned our attention to others walking by our
station. You can imagine our surprise when, 15 minutes later, the same panhandler
came running up to our prayer station, his eyes wide with joy. "Your prayer really worked," he said. "I made more money
in the last 15 minutes than I usually make in a week. I don't know whether
I should thank God for what he just did or ask Him for some more." He paused, seeming to think for a moment, and then continued. "I suppose I should thank God for what he has already done for me."
He nodded knowingly. That man on the street realized a truth that most of us forget. We are
quick to ask God to bless us, but almost without hesitation we are on
to our next request. Why don't you take today and thank God for the good
people and good things with which he has already blessed your life. Jon Cicle (6/6/2002) |
