Here's a section from the book, "From the Great Omission to Vibrant Faith," Vibrant Faith Publishing, 2009. I thought it was a powerful story.
Recently I started a new ritual I learned from church.
My daughter Samantha is three. Every night it's: "Daddy will you tuck me in?" "Of course" is always my answer (and with joy). But this night would be different. After I covered Sam up, rubberd her back and stroked her hair like I normally do, this night I leaned over and made the sign of the cross on her forehead. Then I whispered in her ear, "God made you special and I love you." Then off I went to finish my nightly routines.
That was two years ago, and it continues to this day. I go into Sam's room and I whisper in her ear: "God made you special and I love you." That is a rich blessing. But the true blessing of that ritual came back to me in a surprising, heart-warming way.
A few weeks ago, after a longer than normal weekend being away with our church youth group, I didn't arise to see Sam off to school on Monday as I do every morning. So on that Monday, at 6:45 in the morning, I heard the sound of little feet coming into my bedroom. With no light on, Sam gently lifted the covers and pulled them up to my neck. As I rolled over to look at her smiling face, she quietly took her finger and made the sign of the cross on my forehead and whispered in my ear: "God made you special and I love you." Then just as quietly as she entered, she tiptoed out of the room and was off for school.
We give, we receive; and sometimes in some of the most surprising, least-expected, heartfelt, and wonderful ways. By passing on faith to Sam, she passed it back to me, thus completing that circle. I can't wait to discover other ways, in other new areas, to plant the seed and let it grow.
