Last Thursday I started the day extra early in order to drive to
Sacramento and arrive before 9:00 a.m. for a workshop. Thinking
that traffic would be heavy through Napa and on I-80, I decided
to take the back roads through Pope and Chiles Valleys. The views
were indeed awesome. The sun was just rising. The mists wrapped
around trees making the tips look like Japanese characters on a
milky background. O God, I thought, how majestic is your name in
all the earth! You speak with such beauty and glory. Several miles
of beauty printed in my mind and spoke to my heart.
And then it happened. As I guided my car around a bend in the road,
a truck came barreling around the same corner with its trailer cutting
across my lane. I swerved my wheels into the side of the road and
pressed down on my brakes all the while trying to do it without
over reacting and wrecking my car. As I looked in the side mirror
I saw the truck disappear around the corner as though nothing had
happened.
Pulling onto the road and resuming my journey I realized how close
I had come to having had a serious accident. Tears came to my eyes
as nervous reaction set in and I reached for my cell phone to call
Dick. No service. Every few minutes I checked for service. For miles
there was no phone service. I'll never drive this way again, I thought.
Finally, in the little town of Winter, I could call home and share
my experience of coming close to being in an accident. There. It
was finally out. I could concentrate on my journey again.
However, the scenery had changed. The mists had evaporated. The
school bus was flashing red lights and children were crossing the
road. Traffic lights were directing the flow of business. I tried
to watch the road as I looked at the map to make sure I was on track.
All thoughts of the majesty of God were put aside.
That's life isn't it? There are always competitors to the voice
of God. Close calls in the journey of life, frustrations that eat
away at us, everyday busy-ness, traffic lights and road maps. These
things and many more easily distract us from hearing what God has
to say to us.
"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears
my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and
he with me. " Rev. 3:20
Let's have dinner with Him.
