When you were a kid, did you ever ask thought stumping questions? When
I was growing up, my favorite was, "Can God create a rock so big that He
couldn't lift it?" No matter how you answer it, you find something that God
can't do. Either He can't create a rock that big, or He can't lift the rock. A
trick question, a paradox. But it got me thinking. Is there anything
impossible for God? So you can imagine my interest when I was browsing
the White Estate website and happened upon a excerpt from a letter that Ellen
White had written to her son, Edison: But one thing is impossible
with God--the power of eclipsing the greatness of His gift, in showing His love
for fallen man that He has given in Jesus. (Nov. 18, 1895. Printed in Manuscript
Releases, vol. 21, pp. 392, 393.)
Can God give an ultimate
gift? A gift that can't be improved? Seems so. Jesus was God's best gift. A better
one cannot be given. Jesus put it this way: Greater
love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John
15:13).
And Paul reminds us: But God demonstrates
his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans
5:8).
Consider the cross, a symbol of death, but also a symbol
of love. The question is: How will you respond to God's love? There is no trick
to this question. God is just waiting for your answer. Jon
