It has been a beautiful fall here in Angwin with warm days
and cool evenings, gorgeous colors, the fragrance of falling leaves all
about and, in general, a good feeling in the air. This is the Thanksgiving
Season, and of all people, Christians have much for which to be thankful.
They also recognize that every good gift ultimately comes from God (James
1:17). Scripture frequently reminds us to "Come into his presence with
thankgiving" (Ps. 95:2) and to "Enter His gates with thanksgiving,
and His courts with praise. . . . For the Lord is good; His steadfast
love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations." Christian thanksgiving centers on Jesus, the greatest gift of all and
in Him they see the generosity of God most fully revealed. John 3:16 reads:
"For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, so that everyone
that believes in Him may not perish but have eternal life." Ephesians
2 verse 5 proclaims that we have been saved by "grace." The
Greek word for grace is often translated "gift" or "generosity",
depending on the context. We can say, then, that we have been saved by
the generosity of God. The appropriate Christian response to a generous gift is gratitude and
thanksgiving-and also, a readiness to share the gift. In Matthew 10:8
Jesus instructs His disciples, "Freely you received, now freely give."
This season, then, should be not only one of thanksgiving but also of
generosity where we share the good things we enjoy with others. Malcolm Maxwll (11/20/02) |
