Summary of What the Group Does:
Founded in 1961 by a British lawyer who was moved to plead for “forgotten
prisoners” under a Portuguese dictatorship, Amnesty International
envisions a world in which every person enjoys all the human rights
enshrined in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and
in other internationally recognized human rights standards. Amnesty
International seeks to obtain information about human rights abuses,
publicize the information, and provide social pressure to discourage
such abuse. PUC’s local chapter hosts events to raise
awareness of current human rights issues and abuses, and organizes
letter-writing campaigns to governments and individuals worldwide
to encourage them to end abuses and uphold human rights standards.
